Press release Paris, 23 September 2007. On 4 October 2007, Franck Ancel has celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first launch of an artificial satellite, 1957-2007: from Sputnik Satellite to Explorer Art a creation that will be broadcast exclusively over the Internet between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Paris time. While this international year of the Sputnik – one of this year’s national commemorations in France – is giving rise to scientific conferences, the event presented by Franck Ancel creates an original, live link between past and future, expanding to other fields of research. The site of the great Meudon wind tunnel, part of ONERA’s heritage, illustrated in the work From Aerostation to Aerospace*, is the venue from which this conference/performance in french about the history of the arts of the conquest of the skies and space will be broadcast. From the late-19th century painter Odilon Redon and The Eye Like a Strange Balloon (that) Mounts Toward Infinity, to Jacques Polieri with his Satellite auditorium project, contemporary with the lunar astronauts, by way of V. Tatline or L. Fontana… the sky has struck the imagination and the cosmos has become visionary for artists. In the age of sustainable development and emerging economies, the whole world does not yet communicate directly via satellites for mobile telephony, for long-range weather forecasts and other tools such as GPS devices, but they set the pace of our daily life. As in the past, contemporary creators make their own times their subject matter. Some are even imagining how to test weightlessness in ways other than as future space tourists. Revoir la matrice sacrificielle
Joachim Montessuis et ses hôtes ont tenté et réussi de façon assez magistrale une aventure post-mortem. Tout a commencé par un acte sacrificiel, celui du coq de la maison qui devait sans trop tarder être écarté du poulailler pour prévenir les effets de la consanguinité. Si bien que le rituel s’est imposé de lui même. Le coq a donc été immolé sur un autel improvisé. Mais c’était pour mieux réapparaître dans l’installation que Joachim Montessuis lui a consacrée dans le grenier de l’ancienne ferme ou il était reçu. Au-delà d’un hommage, il s’agissait d’accompagner le mort dans l’expérience du trépas en prenant modèle sur le Bardo, le livre des morts issu de la culture tibétaine. Ainsi, après avoir gravi les marches d’un escalier de nois, le visiteur pénétrait dans un espace saturé de lumière, de son, et à l’atmosphère suffocante due aux tonnes de sel recouvrant le plancher. Associé à une seule source de lumière aveuglante, le chant du coq qui avait été enregistré au préalable de sa funeste disparition, hantait les lieux à la manière d’une complainte d’outre-monde. Le tout était orchestré de manière à provoquer une perte de repères temporels, spatiaux et physiologiques par l’immersion physique et mentale du spectateur dans un univers fantastique. L’une des images qui pouvait alors venir à l’esprit est celle d’une sorte de gouffre, ou de tunnel lumineux et sonore, tel qu’il a pu être décrit dans les fameuses expériences de mort imminente. Aux deux extrémités symboliques de ce tunnel, Joachim Montessuis a convoqué deux mystères fondamentaux. Le premier, celui de la matrice originelle des rituels de procréation et d’immolation, a été identifié au sacrifice humain. A ce sujet, il a même été envisagé que les premiers rois auraient été des rois morts, auxquels on aurait progressivement substitué l’animal sacrificiel. A l’autre bout du tunnel entre en scène le Bardo. Ce guide des voyageurs dans les autres mondes a pour fonction d’enseigner l’art de mourir, d’initier les rites destinés à exorciser, consoler et fortifier le mourant et surtout, à la préparer aux expériences de la mort en évitant les pièges des autres mondes. Dans une troublante triangulation transculturelle et transhistorique, Joachim Montessuis a su réveiller, “transversaliser” et réinventer un processus sociobiologique et mental matriciel de la civilisation humaine.

The SAFE DISTANCE REVISITED action is based on the video found in 1999 during the NATO intervention against Yugoslavia. This initial HI-8 tape was found, edited and post-produced by the group of artists kuda.org in Novi Sad, then called SAFE DISTANCE. The tape was recorded on board of one of several fighter planes, and shows the last moments before the plane crashed. The pilot’s display is the only connection he has with the outside world; he is isolated from the reality he produces on the ground below. Every object is part of this virtual display which the pilot is completely dependent upon. This is a very unique tape, absolutely rare and potentially disturbing.
I went to Novi-Sad in 2004 and went to see people at Kuda.org, they gave me a copy of this tape and was facinated by its intensity. I then used it in a clash process with my own noise crescendos actions.
